How to

Maintain wood floors

Keeping your wood floors in top shape is easier than you might think! With the right care, your engineered wood floor will stay beautiful for years. Light-colored floors tend to show wear and tear more easily than darker ones, so they might need a bit more attention. Our wood floors are designed to be durable and easy to clean, but here are a few tips to keep in mind.

Protect your floor against dirt

Keep gravel and sand outside

The first thing you can do for your wood floor is get a good doormat to clean and dry shoes before coming in. Ideally both inside and outside the door. Also when you can, remove shoes inside the home.

Put protective pads on furniture

Put soft pads on the bottom of table and chair legs and keep an eye that they haven’t fallen off. Don’t use protectors made of metal as they can wear patches and scratch the floor.

Light floors need more attention

If you have light wood floors, you’ll need to clean them more carefully because they are more prone to wear.

Cleaning and maintenance

Cleaning hardwood floors

Dry cleaning is the best way to clean hardwood floors, rather than wet cleaning. Vacuum and sweep regularly and occasionally use a damp, well wrung-out cloth/mop. For best results, use Kährs Cleaner diluted in water or ready-mixed Kährs Spray Cleaner. The floor should dry within a minute if you’ve used the right amount of water. Remember that beech and hard maple floors are extra sensitive to moisture.

Removing marks

Remove marks as soon as possible using Kahrs cleaner. Avoid cleaners containing ammonia, vinegar or bleach.

Oiled floors: Strong stain removing agents and hard scrubbing can lead to discoloration. Oil the cleaned area with Kährs Satin Oil. If there is a color difference after removing the stain, you can use a colored Kährs Touch-up oil.

Use Kahrs cleaner, rubbing alcohol or mineral spririts. Strong stain-removing agents can affect the finish.

Lacquered floors

The factory-lacquered surfaces of Kährs wood floors can be strengthened with an additional coat of lacquer to improve moisture resistance. Please note that an extra coat of lacquer may alter the appearance of the floor’s surface.

Daily cleaning should be done using dry methods. When using a scrubbing or buffing machine, use as little water as possible. Any remaining water should dry within one minute.

Do not allow the lacquer to wear away.  This will prevent dirt and water penetrating the wood, ensuring the floor retains its easy-clean surface.  Applying top coat on time helps prevent damage to the stained surface.

If the floor is very worn, or needs renovation for another reason, it can be machine-sanded down to bare wood and a new surface treatment can be applied.

Oiled floors

The factory-oiled surface must be reinforced with Kährs Satin Oil right after installation. Daily cleaning should be done using dry methods like vacuuming or sweeping, since using water and cleaning products increases the need for additional maintenance.

Wood floors need regular oil treatments. How often depends on usage and foot traffic. Areas that experience more wear than the rest of the floor can be treated separately.

If the floor is very worn, or needs renovation for some other reason, it can be machine-sanded to bare wood and have a new surface treatment applied.
