Turning Waste into Renewable Energy with Wood Pellets

At Kährs, sustainability goes beyond flooring products. We produce wood pellets from the byproducts of wood flooring production at our sites in Nybro, Sweden, and Satulung, Romania, transforming waste into renewable energy.

Harnessing Waste for Renewable Energy

Kährs manufactures CO2-neutral, fossil fuel-free wood pellets from wood shavings and sawdust. These pellets help generate renewable energy, and the energy from these pellets would otherwise emit around 85,000 tons of CO2 if sourced from fuel oil.

A Pioneering Investment in Sustainability

In 2019, we invested in a pellet production facility in Nybro by repurposing an existing industrial site and upgrading it with refurbished equipment and reclaimed materials. The facility has an annual capacity of 60,000 tons of pellets. By reusing the plant’s core infrastructure, rather than building from scratch, we reduced material use, shortened the construction timeline, and took a more resource-efficient approach.

For decades, Kährs has supplied wood powder for district heating across the region. With this facility, we now refine our byproducts even further into high-value biomass pellets, closing the loop on our production streams and providing a reliable, locally sourced form of renewable energy.

Climate Neutral and Certified Biomass

Kährs’ wood pellets are certified by the Sustainable Biomass Program (SBP) and, in 2022, received the Swedish Energy Agency's Sustainability Statement for all biofuels. This ensures that the pellets meet high sustainability standards, promoting a clean, renewable energy source.

Advancing Sustainable Practices

Kährs continues to lead in sustainability by turning production waste into valuable biomass energy, reducing environmental impact and supporting the circular economy. This initiative is just one example of how we strive for a more sustainable future.
